Vietnamese Comic ‘Dia Nguc Mon’ Earns International MANGA Award

For the second year in a row, a Vietnamese comic has won one of Japan’s prestigious International MANGA Awards.

Author and illustrator Can Tieu Hy’s’s Dia Nguc Mon, or Gateway to Underworld, is among the Silver Award winners of the 10th annual International MANGA Awards, according to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This year’s competition brought in 296 entries from 55 different countries, which a panel of judges whittled down to 14 winners, including one Gold Award and three Silver Award winners. France’s Le Maitre d’Armes took home the top prize, while Tieu Hy’s comic joins scavengers from China and the Italian comic Heart of Darkness in the Silver category.

The awards, founded in 2007, were created “for the purpose of expanding international exchange and mutual understanding through world-famous MANGA culture”, according to the ministry. A ceremony will be held in Tokyo on February 6 to celebrate the achievements of this year’s Gold and Silver award winners.

Last year, another Vietnamese comic, Long Than Tuong, also took home a Silver Award.
