Old Quarter Bar Fined VND40m for Breaking Covid-19 Regulations

The bar is located at 33 Mã Mây Street in Hang Buom Ward.

VnExpress reports that the establishment was fined VND40 million (US$1,720) on Wednesday for remaining open when it was supposed to be closed amid Hanoi's partial shutdown of non-essential services. The closures were ordered last week as part of an effort to slow the renewed coronavirus outbreak centered in Da Nang.

At 1am on the night of August 1, the evening that the shutdown order went into effect, police inspected a number of popular bars in the ward. During their rounds, they found about 30 customers at the bar in question, and the fine followed a few days later.

An estimated 95,000 Hanoians returned to the city from Da Nang in the month of July, spurring health officials to order mass-scale testing for the novel coronavirus. According to the news source, 72,000 people have tested negative so far after being screen by the rapid COVID-19 test.

However, city chairman Nguyễn Đức Chung has warned that these results may be misleading, as rapid test kits can be unreliable. People who visited the central coastal city have been advised to monitor their health for any virus symptoms and practice social distancing.

Bars and nightclubs have also been closed in Saigon, where eight COVID-19 cases have been detected during this new outbreak so far.

Since community transmission returned late last month, nearly 300 cases have been confirmed nationwide, mostly in Da Nang and neighboring Quang Nam Province, while the country's death toll related to the virus has gone from zero to 10.
