New Made-in-Vietnam Vessel to Begin Downtown-Can Gio Service Next Month

A boat built in Hai Phong province will begin a river bus service between Saigon and Can Gio in the near future.

Tuoi Tre reports that on Sunday the Ministry of National Defense's 189 Shipbuilding Company and locally based GreenlinesDP Company introduced the boat, which can carry up to 136 passengers.

The boat, which costs US$1.2 million to build, is expected to be put into operation next month, connecting Saigon with far-flung Can Gio District via a 75-minute-long journey. Fares will range from VND180,000-200,000 per person, the news source shares.

The announcement of the river bus route follows last month's confusing "launch" of another line connecting Thu Duc District with central District 1. That service should open to the public on October 1.

The Saigon-Can Gio vessel is part of a deal between the two above-mentioned firms that also includes vessels which will connect Saigon and Con Dao, as well as Phan Thiet and Phu Quy Island.
