Martyr cemeteries are a common occurrence across Vietnam. In countless communes in every province, modest gravestones mark the resting places of Vietnam's fallen soldiers in neat, orderly rows. Truong Son Martyrs' Cemetery, among the largest in the country, holds the tombs of over 10,000 soldiers alone, enough to warrant a 3D map of the site and a directory of the fallen for its visitors. But emblazoned across far too many gravestones across Vietnam is the phrase chưa biết tên – “name unknown”.

The prolific musician was not only celebrated for his unique sound and chart-topping hits but his array of ever-changing personas, from Ziggy Stardust and Major Tom to Aladdin Sane, the Thin White Duke and Jareth the Goblin King. Though Bowie, who succumbed to an 18-month battle with cancer just two days after his 69th birthday, is no longer with us, the iconic pop star managed to leave behind an incredible mark.

At the turn of the 20th century, Englishwoman Gabrielle Maud Vassal lived in Vietnam with her husband, French military doctor Joseph Jean Vassal. During her three-year stay in the country, Mrs. Vassal managed to travel the Vietnamese countryside, exploring the Central Highlands from her home base in Nha Trang as well as making trips up to Hanoi and down to Saigon.
