Vung Tau Plans New Airport on Go Gang Island to Replace Existing One

Authorities of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province have decided to move forward with a plan to construct a new airport.

On April 13, Vice Chairman of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Le Quoc Tuan approved the site of the new aerodrome, called Go Gang Airport, for feasibility studies, reports Tien Phong. The new airport will be on Go Gang Island, Long Son Commune of Vung Tau City, less than 15 kilometers from the city center.

The newspaper adds that, once finished, Go Gang will be capable of serving 100,000 passengers and 500 tons of cargo a year. The price tag for the airport, spanning 250 hectares, is estimated to be US$1 billion (VND23.5 trillion).

Go Gang was proposed to replace the existing Vung Tau Airport in District 9 of the city. The current facility is small and wedged right in the middle of the city center, making future expansion challenging. Thus, it mostly serves small military planes and helicopters used in the oil industry.

Apart from the existing Vung Tau Airport, the province also has a small airport on Con Dao Island, which received a proposal for an upgrade back in July last year. The Ho Tram Airport was also put forward as early as 2016, but the project hasn’t seen much progress since.
