From the organizer: The Haçienda or FAC51 to give its catalogue number, is quite possibly the most famous club in the world. Opened in 1982 by Manchester indie label Factory and their flagship band, New Order, it rose to prominence throughout the late 80s, and is credited with bringing house music across the pond from New York, Chicago and Detroit, as well as the subsequent explosion of the acid house music scene in the UK.
The Hacienda’s unique sense of style and minimalist branding perfectly complimented the pioneering enterprise and, dare we say ‘arrogance’, of a club that did everything its own way. During its peak years from 88-92, The Hac was widely regarded as the greatest club on earth, and paved the way for superclubs such as Ministry of Sound, Cream, Renaissance and Gatecrasher.
As the Hacienda gained in notoriety during the 90s, it also became a battleground for rival gangs wanting to control the drugs inside the venue. Fist fights escalated to knife attacks and eventually to shootings, and the Hacienda was dead. The fire, music and spirit that had encapsulated a generation had been trampled out by Manchester’s criminal element. The club finally closed its doors in 1997, later to make way for luxury apartments.
Despite this, the club’s legacy has lived on through its music and its attitude, inspiring the movie ‘24hr Party People’ and now licensing its brand to Hacienda events around the world. Teaming up with Saigon Sound System, this will be the Hacienda’s introduction to the Vietnam club scene, with the intention of staging regular Hacienda nights featuring some of The Hacienda’s legendary DJ’s, as well as emerging DJ’s who share the same passion for music and what The Hacienda still stands for.
