MadderModes - a duo consisting of Andy Harper and Obs resident Nic Ford - have their latest release out soon on world-acclaimed, cutting-edge techno label Modelmaker. The occasion deserves a party in its honour, and that’s exactly what this is.

MadderModes’ production method sees Nic Ford and Andy Harper working in parallel on tracks from opposite sides of the planet. Having forged their musical relationship in the post-industrial, sound-heavy world of Manchester, UK, their shared vision for their productions has led to the creation of some truly spectacular tracks. 

Combining all sorts of emotions, dynamics and ingeniously sourced samples, their 2015 release on Millions Of Moments “Green Corn Moon” made its way into the playlists of some highly respected figures and institutions of the underground electronic sound world - including the likes of Berghain resident Nick Hoppner. Then in early 2016, the Empirical Evidence EP came out on Voodoo Down US records - also to wide acclaim. And now we await the first glimpses of MDL06 - Framing Device - another 4 track EP that promises to showcase the duo’s production prowess operating at full power, with resonant, melodic and highly intelligent movements into the deeper realms of house and techno. 

Joining the party will be ModelMaker co-bossman and a globally-recognized sound force of his own - James What - who played at The Obs last year and holds what is definitely up there in the records for longest sets played at the venue. A James What set can circle a wide section of electronic sound, blending thumping, no-nonsense and sample-heavy house workouts with all sorts of jazzier elements, often making a few stops in an acid-zone before grinding it back to techno - all executed in a way that just rolls through a night with ease and determination.

MadderModes are an English electronic music duo consisting of Andy Harper and Nic Ford. Andy originally from Canada and Nic from Manchester they formed in 2005 when they met at university and began to share their musical backgrounds and passion for records, electronic instruments and sampling.

◎ JAMES WHAT BIO ◎

James What has long been making his mark on electronic music. His is a two pronged attack, the first being solo as both producer and DJ. He has played everywhere from Robot Heart at Burning Man to across both Americas, Europe and Asia, has previously hooked up with Crosstown boss Damian Lazarus as Zod and released on his other label, Rebellion. So too has his original solo work, which is a knowing concoction of gruff techno, slick minimal and classicist house aesthetics, come on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Poker Flat and Murmur, with remixes being commissioned by Rue de Plaisance, CityFox and My Favourite Robot. Of course, James is also one half of Berkson & What, the analogue loving house and techno partnership that has won worldwide acclaim for their live shows and productions on labels like Poker Flat and Crosstown. That project is about to birth its first album, and has also given rise to new label Modelmaker, meaning this venerable talent is about to leave yet another indelible mark on the scene that he has so intrinsically been linked with ever since making his debut.
