Defense Ministry to Hand Over Land Near Tan Son Nhat to City

The Ministry of National Defense is set to hand over an area of land adjacent to Tan Son Nhat International Airport in an effort to ease traffic congestion near the facility.

Tuoi Tre reports that the plan was discussed at a meeting on Saturday led by General Ngo Xuan Lich, the Minister of National Defense, and Nguyen Thien Nhan, the city's Party secretary.

Accordingly, the ministry will let go of a patch of land along chronically congested Truong Chinh Street, which borders the airport, for municipal usage to improve traffic infrastructure. A few weeks ago, the ministry shut down 50 stalls and three gas stations that had been operating illegally on the land.

The hand-over, which will take place on Thursday, is part of a broader effort by the ministry to support Saigon's development, according to the news source. Since 2014 the government organ has given 177.3 hectares of land to the city administration and another 98.6 hectares to the Ministry of Transport.

The city will also receive land near District 2's gridlocked Cat Lai Port, though specifics regarding this move are unavailable.
