Saigon to Bury All Electrical Wires by 2020

Saigon’s iconic electrical wiring may soon be a thing of the past as city officials work to bury power lines underground by 2020.

The huge project started in early 2015 as part of an effort to beautify the city streets and reduce risk for commuters.

Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation has completely buried power, information and telecommunication cables in 74 streets across six areas, including neighborhoods in Districts 4 and 6 as well as Thu Duc District, reports VietnamNet.

Power wires in District 1, District 3 and inter-district streets are next in line to go underground with a targeted completion date of 2018.

Saigon’s hopelessly tangled “spiderweb” of electrical wires has been a common sight for decades. While some older Saigoneers may harbor nostalgic sentiments for these hovering electrocution hazards, they are a danger in others’ daily lives, even causing the death of a maintenance worker earlier this year.
