'Em Chua 18' Is Vietnam's First Film to Have Foreign Remakes

Foreign filmmakers are seeking to remake Em Chua 18, Vietnam's biggest domestically produced box-office hit to date.

Le Thanh Son, the movie's director, recently shared with VTC News that producers from South Korea, China and India have approached the film company Chanh Phuong to negotiate deals to redo Em Chua 18.

The movie smashed Vietnam's box-office records by grossing VND150 billion (US$6.6 million) two weeks into its official release, according to Zing.vn. Its success almost rivals that of Kong: Skull Island, which raked in VND169 billion (US$7.4 million) earlier this year.

Once the deals are sealed, Em Chua 18 will become Vietnam's first movie to be remade abroad. As Vietnam has mostly been dominated by adaptations of foreign productions, Chanh Phuong is having a hard time working out the right selling price, says director Son.

Em Chua 18 – or Jailbait, as its title is translated – follows the life of Linh Dan, a barely-legal high school student who blackmails Hoang, a lecherous 38-year-old yoga instructor, into becoming her trophy boyfriend. The rom-com is packed with Mean Girls-esque drama: a laid-back international school, a band of popular cheerleaders and jocks, the outcast kids, and a rivalry culminating at the end-of-year prom.
