Slideshow: A Look Inside Saigon's New Public Toilets

Last Saturday Saigon’s first batch of high-end public toilets (4-5 stars, whatever that means) were opened at Tao Dan Park, 23/9 Park and Le Van Tam Park in District 1.

The facilities are part of a pilot program organized by the HCMC People’s Committee and Transport Department which calls for 11 of these toilets to be constructed.

The facilities, which will be paired with ATMs (banks are sponsoring the project), are meant to provide relief for locals and tourists alike at a cost of VND800 million each.

According to Nguyen Huu Tin, deputy chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee, the facilities will be equipped with the most advanced sanitary equipment and, “meet regulations on urban landscape beautification, environmental protection, wastewater treatment, lighting, and air ventilation.”

Other toilets will be built in busy downtown areas such as, Le Van Tam Park in District 1; Gia Dinh Park in Go Vap District; Cho Lon Coach Station in District 5; and Dam Sen Coach Station in District 11.

Compared to their pale green, paid counterparts, these toilets do look pretty darn good.
