[Photos] Typhoon Kalmaegi Causes Death, Destruction In Northern Vietnam

Typhoon Kalmaegi touched down in Vietnam last night, uprooting trees, destroying homes and sparking mass evacuations.

Here’s a quick timeline of the storm’s path through Vietnam, from VN Express:

8:30pm: In Hạ Long City, the Bãi Cháy bridge was closed and, as a precaution, authorities cut the city’s power.

In Quảng Ninh Province, authorities evacuated 10,000 people from areas at high risk of landslides. Strong winds in Hải Phòng City uprooted many trees and caused flight cancelations.

9:15pm: Winds up to 102kph hit Hanoi and people in skyscrapers could hear strong whistling sounds as they passed by.

10pm – 10:30pm: Kalmaegi swept through Quảng Ninh Province, stripping the roofs from houses and destroying rice fields.

11:30pm: In Hải Phòng, a drifting fishing boat from Nghệ An Province suffered a broken anchor, forcing a rescue operation to save the 13 people onboard, 2 of whom were injured.

Thanh Nien reports that 7 people were killed and 6 injured in Lạng Sơn Province early this morning.
