Spotify Is Launching in Vietnam in 3 Days

Hang on to your seat (and mobile devices), Spotify is hitting Vietnam in three days!

In a sudden move that we’re sure has caused whiplash all over Vietnam’s cybersphere, Swedish music-streaming service Spotify recently announced its launch in Vietnam this morning, March 10.

“More than 35 million songs are on the way to you! Spotify, the world’s biggest music streaming service will be in Vietnam in three days. #SpotifyVietnam,” writes the announcement on its official Facebook account.

It also appears that the page for the app’s Vietnam service has only been set up recently: on March 5, it updated the cover photo with the hashtag #SpotifyVietnam, along with the phrase “coming soon” in Vietnamese.

At the time of writing, the company remains mum on details of the local launch. It might be interesting to see how Spotify fares in Vietnam. While its database is still unmatched when it comes to English-language music, Spotify’s Vietnamese-language song repertoire is lackluster at best.

Local players like Nhaccuatui and Zing are currently Vietnamese’s favorite platforms to listen to local music while Spotify’s direct competitor, Apple Music, has been here since 2015 at an absurdly low price.

Rumors about Spotify’s entrance to Vietnam started brewing in June 2017, when the company began recruiting music editors for Thailand and Vietnam. Looking back, Spotify’s announcement today fits with how it has operated in the past: in October 2015, it also started looking for editors in Indonesia, only to launch in the country about six months later.
